This page explains how course completion is determined for Start ASL courses and how students, homeschool families, and schools may use course completion records for educational documentation.
Start ASL provides structured American Sign Language instruction designed to support independent learners, homeschool education, and supplemental language learning.
1. Course Completion Requirements
Students are considered to have completed a course when they have satisfied the required learning components within that course.
Course completion requirements may include:
• viewing all required lessons
• completing quizzes or assessments
• submitting assignments (when applicable)
• achieving a passing score on required evaluations
Specific completion requirements may vary by course level.

2. Self-Study Course Completion
Students enrolled in Self-Study courses complete the course independently.
Self-Study courses may include:
• instructional video lessons
• practice activities
• quizzes or knowledge checks
Completion is based on the student meeting the course progress and assessment requirements defined within the course.
Instructor grading and individualized feedback are not included in Self-Study plans unless otherwise stated.
3. Guided Course Completion
Students enrolled in Guided courses may receive additional instructor support.
Guided courses may include:
• instructor feedback on assignments
• graded submissions
• additional practice activities
• participation in live practice sessions
Course completion verification may include instructor review of required assignments.
Instructor feedback is provided within reasonable timeframes.
4. Course Completion Certificates
Students who complete all required components of a course may receive a Certificate of Completion.
Certificates may include:
• student name
• course title
• completion date
• issuing organization
Certificates verify that a student completed the course requirements but do not represent accredited academic credit.
Acceptance of course completion is determined by the receiving institution.
5. Use for Homeschool Documentation
Many homeschool families use Start ASL courses as part of their language curriculum.
Parents or guardians are responsible for determining how the course fits within their homeschool program.
Course completion records may be used as supporting documentation in homeschool portfolios, including:
• course descriptions
• student progress records
• certificates of completion
• assignment submissions (when applicable)
Parents or guardians serve as the official record keepers for homeschool transcripts unless otherwise required by local regulations.
6. Use for World Language Credit
Start ASL courses are designed to support learning American Sign Language as a world language.
However, Start ASL does not grant academic credit.
Students wishing to receive world language credit must obtain approval from their:
• school
• homeschool program
• college or university
Each institution determines whether external coursework is accepted for credit.
We recommend that students verify acceptance policies with their institution before enrolling if credit is required.
7. Completion Verification
Schools, homeschool programs, or institutions may request verification that a student completed a course.
Verification may include confirmation of:
• enrollment
• course completion
• completion date
• certificate issuance
Requests for verification must be submitted by the student or authorized guardian.
Additional documentation may be available upon request.
8. Instructor Feedback Limitations
For Guided courses that include instructor grading:
• feedback is provided for assignments designated for instructor review
• grading is limited to assignments required by the course
Instructor feedback is intended to support learning and may not constitute formal academic evaluation.
9. Student Responsibility
Students are responsible for:
• completing course requirements
• submitting assignments when required
• maintaining access to their course account
Students should download or save certificates and documentation for their records after completing a course.
10. Changes to Course Requirements
Start ASL reserves the right to update course content, assignments, or completion requirements as part of ongoing course improvements.
Updates will apply to future students and may apply to currently enrolled students where appropriate.
