Lou Fant, CODA, is my favorite historical figure. Unlike Stokoe, he could sign, had a Deaf heart and spent his life making services for the Deaf include interpreters. He was instrumental in establishing the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) and wrote, SILVER THREADS about the initial meeting at a NAD Convention, taught ASL (wrote THE PHRASE BOOK), brought attention to signing to mainstream television with popular prime time shows like “Little House on the Prairie”, “Highway to Heaven”, and in the series “OFF HAND” by being the interpreter and voice for Deaf host, Steve Baldwin.

Lou was the inspiration behind my becoming an interpreter with a heart and concern for the Deaf. He was also my role model for always striving for self improvement and sharing knowledge with those Deaf who are not disabled but are handicapped by not having equal access to information.

Thank you

My Father was a true inspiration and touched the lives of so many people during the course of his lifetime. Over the years I have been blessed from time to time of this reminder.

A few years ago, one of my daughters was taking a language course for her degree. After class her instructor of an ASL class found out who her grandfather was. She broke down in tears sharing the story of inspiration he had on her. She said he was responsible for her deciding what direction to seek her masters in. A pivotal time in her life.

This is just one story, I know there are more. And it is clear to me that his passion, how he spent his life, what he shared with others, will always “pay it forward.”

In a banner of the graduating class the year he passed was a quote from him saying that his only legacy was his students. How true.

Little stories such as this have found their way to me and I will always hold them close to my heart.

Again, I say Thank you. Your words are now in my heart.
